Guacamole with an Unexpected Twist

Guacamole with an Unexpected Twist

A fresh Mexican dip made from avocado, tomatoes, salt, and chili. You can also season it with lime, onion, or garlic. But add fresh herbs, and something close to a little miracle happens right in your kitchen.

What is it?

This vibrant green delicacy made from ripe avocados was prepared by the ancient Aztecs long before Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. They considered avocados both an aphrodisiac and a sacred crop that gave strength to warriors. Traditionally, avocados were mashed in a special mortar carved from volcanic stone, which was believed to add minerals and a distinctive flavor to the dish.

Over time, this famous dip found its way into kitchens all around the world, with chefs constantly inventing new ways to enrich its flavor. Fresh herbs from Oliver are a perfect match for guacamole.

When to serve it?

Guacamole is traditionally scooped up with crispy tortilla chips and is a staple of many Mexican dishes. It also works beautifully as a creamy sauce for grilled meat, a dip for fresh vegetables, or simply as a spread for bread and sandwiches. Try it as a quick topping for roasted potatoes, too.

For flavor and well-being

Guacamole is one of those dishes that proves healthy food can be incredibly delicious. Avocados are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, and their healthy fats help your body absorb vitamins more effectively. Tomatoes provide valuable antioxidants, while fresh herbs add brightness, freshness, and a vibrant finish.

If you are prone to food allergies, take care with tomatoes and onions.

Starring: CILANTRO & MINT

You've probably enjoyed guacamole the classic way—without herbs. But try this fresh twist, where cilantro and mint don't just play a supporting role—they take center stage. Cilantro adds its signature citrusy-green notes, while mint brings an unexpected burst of freshness. With Oliver, fresh herbs are always within reach and at their peak flavor—exactly what great guacamole deserves.

You can find cilantro and mint together in the "Dips & Dressings" capsule set.

Guacamole with an Unexpected Twist

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Servings: 3

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados (about 300 g)

  • Juice of 1 small lime

  • ½ small red onion (or 1 spring onion)

  • 1 handful of cilantro (leaves and tender stems) (about 10 g)

  • ½ handful of mint (mostly leaves) (about 5 g)

  • Salt and black pepper

Optional additions:

  • A little grated lime zest

  • 1 small tomato (flesh only, seeds removed)

  • 1 small garlic clove

  • 1 small chili pepper or a pinch of chili flakes

  • 1–2 teaspoons olive oil for a smoother texture

Method:

  1. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl.

  2. Roughly mash the avocado with a fork. If you have a traditional basalt mortar, even better. Guacamole should not be completely smooth—leave a few small chunks of avocado.

  3. Immediately stir in the lime juice and a pinch of salt. This brightens the flavor and helps prevent the avocado from browning.

  4. Finely chop the onion (and, if using, the tomato, garlic, and chili), then prepare the herbs:

    • Chop the cilantro moderately fine, including the tender stems.

    • Chop the mint a little more finely.

  5. Season with black pepper and more salt if needed. For an extra silky texture, stir in a teaspoon of olive oil.

Tips & Tricks:

  • The easiest way to tell if an avocado is ripe is to gently remove the small stem at the top. If it comes off easily and the flesh underneath is green to yellow-green, it's ready to eat.

  • For an even deeper flavor, try the "Quick Herb Paste". On a small plate or cutting board, mash a few mint leaves, a little cilantro, a pinch of salt, and a teaspoon of lime juice into a paste (using the side of a knife works well). Stir the paste into the guacamole for a more aromatic, evenly distributed herb flavor.

  • When serving, finish with an extra handful of chopped herbs and a few drops of lime juice. Serve with tortilla chips, radishes, or cucumber sticks.
